Wilbert Olan Bartels, the son of William and Anna (Koester)Bartels, was born on July 2,1915, at Stoddard, Neb. He was one of 13 children born to this parents.
He passed away on Jan. 21,2004 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, Neb. at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 19 days. He was baptized into Christian faith on July 18, 1915 by Pastor Nischwitz, at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Stoddard. Wilbert completed school through the 8th grade at country schools in Thayer County and Nuckolls County, Neb., where he learned to speak English. His parents only spoke German in their home. He was confirmed in the faith on June 1, 1930, by Pastor John Meyer, at Evangelical Lutheran Church at Kiowa, Neb.
Wilbert began his working career when he was 15 years old, at the Deshler Broom Factory. He was united in marriage to Bernice
Ahrens Denzin at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler, on Dec. 22, 1937, by Rev. Fred Schwerin.
Wilbert served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted on April 29, 1943, served in the South Pacific and received his honorable discharge on Jan. 24,1946.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler and also a member of the Deshler Halfman American Legion Post #352 for over 41 years.
Wilbert and Bernice had been married for 66 years and
had a very close relationship. They enjoyed drives in the car "to see the country."
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna
Bartels; four brothers, Walter Bartels, Herbert Bartels, Louis Bartels and Lawrence Bartels; three sisters, Adelia Bartels, Bertha Bartels and Viola Hintz.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Deshler; one brother, Norman Bartels of Palm Springs, Calif.; four sisters, Lucille Schoenfeld of Napa, Calif.; Enola Woodman and Fern Thompson, both of Hebron and Lavena Precht of Wheatridge, Colo.; nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 24,2004, at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler, with Phillip Nielsen officiating.
Congregational hymn was "Jesus, Savior Pilot Me," and Tim Koester sang "Lord Take My Hand And Lead Me," Barbara Koester served as the organist. Pallbearers were Lonnie Hintz, Barb Cabrera, Alva McDowell, Don Stelling, Greg Drohman and Gary Meyer.
Interment with full military rites by Deshler Halfman American Legion Post #352 was in the Deshler City Cemetery at Deshler.
Memorials have been established to Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler. Ahrendts Funeral Home of Deshler was in charge of the arrangements.
