John was born June 2, 1924, in Wynot, Neb., to the Reverend Rhuben O. and Irene (née Juel) Aga.
He was a 1942 graduate of Mankato High School. John enrolled in the U.S. Navy V-12 program during his first year of college at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. This program provided an accelerated pre-med college education at the University of Dubuque, Iowa, and Medical School at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, Neb.
Graduating in 1948, John took his internship at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif., where he met Betty.
They were married June 9, 1951, in Fergus Falls. John served as a medical officer in the Navy during the Korean War and a four-year fellowship in surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (1952-1956). John was a surgeon in medical practice in Brainerd from 1957-1989. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd and enjoyed golfing, fishing and photography.
Survivors include his wife Betty; his children Cynthia (Ronald) Gohl, Susan Hagen, Steve Aga, Jeffrey (Sarah) Aga; grandchildren Ben Hagen, Jonathan, Neddy, Molly and Emily Aga; and his brother, Rhuben Aga.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Kay; his parents; and his siblings, Lila and Peter.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor David Holte officiating. Private burial services will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post No. 255 Color Guard. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd.
Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd or the St. Joseph's Medical Center Foundation.
