John August Altus was born in Hilbersdorf, Prussia, Germany, which is a German municipality in the Thuringian district of Greiz. During its turbulent history, the villagers have belonged to Saxony, to Altenburg, and finally to Thuringia. From 1952 on, the community belonged to the Bezirk of Gera as well as to the Landkreis of the same name.

John A. Altus, aged 81, died at his home near Leroy Friday, May 10th. Funeral services were held at the Gerald Church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11th, with Rev. C. Wolf officiating. Interment was at the Closner Cemetery. Pall bearers were six grandsons: Robert Altus, Harold Jantz, Hans Boettger, Willie Schaeper, Arthur and Arnold Hoffmeyer.

Survivors are seven daughters, Mrs. Ed Hoffmeyer of Leroy, Mrs. Henry Schaeper of Robinsonville, Mrs. Ed Boettger of Waco, Mrs. W. C. Froehlich of Winchester?, Mrs. R. Fechner of N.J., Mrs. Will Jantz and Mrs. Leopold Jantz, both of Leroy; three sons, Will Altus of Leroy, Theodore of Arizona and Walter of Harlingen; one sister of Germany.
