Phillip was born September 14, 1917 to Vito and Mattia (Maro) Alongi in Rock Island. His marriage to Dorothy Jane Pfaff on July 8, 1938, was the start of a lifelong union of 66 years. They raised their family of six children together. Phil worked hard to provide for his family and owned a moving company for many years, later retiring with 19 years as an inspector from the John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline.
As a young person, Phil enjoyed baseball and boxing with his two brothers. He loved to dance, especially after he met his future wife, Jane. Fishing and bowling were two of his pastimes - he always enjoyed "catching a big one"! He savored his favorite weekly meal, his wife's homemade Italian spaghetti and meat balls. Phil was proud of his Italian heritage and was a member of St. Pius Church for many years. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling, especially their 50th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii. He liked working in his yard and creating with stained glass, and in his seventies he taught himself how to play the piano just for something to do.
Phil was a peace loving man, with a good sense of humor. He was also a loyal and loving husband - in his eighties he spent several years faithfully caregiving for his beloved wife in their home, providing a wonderful model of tenderness, self sacrifice and real love to his children and grandchildren. In the end, Phil would say his best times were spent with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren, who always could make him laugh.
Phillip is survived by his daughters, Janet Alongi of Davenport, IA, Martha (Wayne) Victor of Omaha, NE, Phyllis (Bill) Schnell of Kissimmee, FL, and Joyce (Gary) Murphy of Taylor Ridge, IL, and his son, Ted (Suzanne) Alongi of Prairie Village, KS, as well as fourteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He has been preceded in death by his wife Jane, brothers Nicholas, Louis and George Alongi and his son, Phillip Craig Alongi.
Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Church.
