Lelia V. Choate was born October 12, 1896 in Jackson County to George Smith and Josephine Pinkerton Smith. Her surviving siblings included Lester Smith of Gorham, Hazel Smith, Grace Smith and Lois Gross, all of Chester and Edna Bale of Easton, IL. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
She married John L. Choate Sr. on February 2, 1918 in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death in March 1950. Her surviving children included Charles Choate of Fairview Heights; Robert and Harold Choate, both of Rockwood; Jack Choate of Chester; Ruby Jewell Morrison of Coultervlle and Eula Mae Berry of Collinsville. Two sons preceded her in death.
Mrs. Choate was a homemaker and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Additional memberships included the Royal Neighbors, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Chester, Gold Star Mothers and the Mississippi Valley Home Extension. She was a member of the Cora Presbyterian Church.
Lelia Choate died at the age of 89 on Wednesday, July 16, 1896 in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Her funeral was held at Schroeder-McClure Funeral Home in Chester. Memorial contributions were to be made to Buchanan Cemetery.
