Vincent (Vincenzo) Cafarelli was born in Ferrandina, Matera province, Basilicata, Italy, on 14 February 1854 to Domenico Cafarelli of Ferrandina and Maria Gaetana Mastronardi of Craco, Matera province. He was a farmer and stone mason, lived and worked for a while in Stigliano, Matera province, and married Grazia Sarubbi in her hometown of Accettura, Matera province, on 28 February 1876. Vincenzo immigrated to New York with his eldest son Domenico, arriving on 27 April 1886 aboard the S.S. St. Laurent. He returned to Italy several times and brought Grazia and their other children to the U.S. in 1893, arriving aboard the S.S. Chanadernagor on 21 June. He worked as a stone mason in the U.S., died on 26 September 1922, and was buried two days later.
