His birth name was James Arnold Schevers.

The Rev. Joel Schevers, Order of Carmelites, died Dec. 14, 2009. He was 91. Fr. Schevers was born in Chicago, IL, on Jan. 6, 1918. He entered the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (PCM), Order of Carmelites, in 1935, and was ordained a priest in 1942. Among his many assignments: Assoc. Pastor of St. Mary's Church in Joliet, IL; teacher at Joliet Catholic HS (boys) and Providence HS (girls); Vocation Director for the PCM Province; teacher at Mt. Carmel Prep Seminary in Niagara Falls, ON; founder and Pastor of Mt. Carmel Parish in Houston, TX; founder and Assoc. Pastor of St. Basil's Parish in Ottawa, Canada; member of the Carmelite retreat and mission band in Chicago, IL; first director of the Carmelite Chapel at Northshore Shopping Center in Peabody, MA; Pastor of St. Anastasia Church in Teaneck, NJ; Dean for the area of south central Bergen County in the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ; Parish Coordinator of St. Mary Parish in Closter, NJ; Assoc. Pastor and then Co-Pastor at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Tenafly, NJ; Assoc. Pastor at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, FL; member of the Marriage Tribunal and Tribunal Member of the Office of Ecumenical and Interfaith Affairs of the Diocese of Venice, FL. During his retirement he assisted part-time at weekend Masses at Epiphany Cathedral. He was preceded in death by his father, James Bernard Schevers; his mother, Agnes (Reiter) Schevers; and his sister, Dorothy Cooper. He is survived by his brother, Richard Schevers; his sister, Betty Hamer, and by many cousins, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the National Shrine of St. Thérèse (8501 Bailey Rd.) in Darien, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Society of the Little Flower, 1313 Frontage Road, Darien, IL 60561; or to the Carmelite Missions, 8501 Bailey Road, Darien, IL 60561.
