Charles T. Berky first became involved in the Civil War as a member of the "Benton Cadets," formed at the Benton Barracks in St. Louis, but also included a company from Ohio.

On Nov 13, 1861, he enlisted as a Private in Co. H of the 4th Iowa Cavalry in St. Louis. He was mustered into federal service on March 13, 1862. On July 28, 1862, Berky was promoted to the position of Quartermaster-Sergeant of the 3rd Battalion of the 4th Iowa. But he was mustered out of the 4th Iowa on Oct 25, 1862, when his position was eliminated by General Order 126 of 1862, War Dept., A.G.O.

Berky stayed a civilian for a while, but then re-enlisted as a Private in Co. B of the 7th Missouri Cavalry on Feb 9, 1864, in St. Louis. He was later appointed Regimental Quartermaster-Sergeant on Oct 20, 1864, by G.O. 16, Headquarters, 7th MO Cavalry. He became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on April 30, 1864.

Berky transferred and was reappointed as Regimental Quartermaster-Sergeant of the 1st Missouri Cavalry on Feb 22, 1865. He finally mustered out of the service on Sept 1, 1865, in Little Rock.

After his death, his widow, Artimisia A. Berky, applied for her widow's pension on Aug 29, 1901. Her application is #747,852.
