Lawrence E. Woodward served as a Private 1st Class in Company B, 164th U.S. Infantry Regiment, 23rd Infantry "Americal" Division, United States Army during World War II.

He was a son of Clarence E. Woodward and Jeanetta M. (Barnes) Woodward.

He died of wounds received in battle in the Philippines on April 15, 1945.

His hometown was listed as Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

He was originally from the State of Pennsylvania.

He was interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on July 21, 1949.

PVT. WOODWARD SLAIN IN PACIFIC

Relatives in Gettysburg received word today that Pfc. Lawrence Woodward, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Woodward, who formerly resided on South Washington Street here died April 12 of wounds received in the Philippines.

The young soldier was a nephew of Mrs. Sam Miller, 126 West Middle Street, and a sister of Mrs. John Stover, Jr., Arendtsville.

The information from the War Department stated that the young Woodward was seriously wounded in the Philippines February 12 and had been a patient in an Army hospital on the islands. He had been in the Army for two years, having entered the service a year after finishing Gettysburg High School in 1941.

Mr. and Mrs. Woodward now reside at Norwood, near Philadelphia, where Mr. Woodward, who was familiarly known here as "Whitey," is employed at the Baldwin works.

Private Woodward is survived, in addition to his parents, by eight brothers and sisters. One brother, Robert, is serving in the Merchant Marine.
