Isadore S. Girard, 98, of Sioux City passed away Friday, March 9, 2012, at a local care facility.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 6 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Isadore was born the son of Felix and Leah (LaJesse) Girard on February 22, 1914 in Vermillion, S.D. He was the 13th of 18 children. He graduated from Jefferson High School.
He married Lena Dandurand on November 16, 1936. They moved to Sioux City, where they lived with their six children until her death in 1982. He later married Berniece Harris on November 8, 1983, and moved to Akron, Iowa. Isadore worked at Cudahy packing plant, during which time he served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy as Fireman First Class in World War II, returning to Cudahy until the plant closed. He then worked for Safeway grocery store as a butcher, followed by a job in the water department for the city of Sioux City until his retirement.
He enjoyed dancing, which he managed to do at least once a week, even in his later years. Some of his other interests included fishing, arm wrestling, pulling pranks on whomever fell victim, bingo, camping, gardening, cards and spending time with his family and friends. He was very well known and enjoyed by all.
Isadore is survived by two sons, Donald (Nelia) Girard of Las Vegas, Nev., and Gerald (Terra) Girard of Minneapolis, Minn.; four daughters, Sharon Doty of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mary (S. Paul) Mosher of Sioux City, Deb (Dan) Britt of Le Mars, Iowa, and Vicki (Kevin) Kollbaum of Hornick, Iowa; one sister, Beulah (Darrel) Brown of North Sioux City; 18 grandchildren; one stepgrandson; 45 great- grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lena; eight brothers, Albert, Peter, Adlore, Harvey, Alphonse, Israel, Emil and Ranal; seven sisters, Amanda, Alphosine, Roseanna, Emma, Lena, Irene and Melvina; and one son-in-law, L. Kenneth Doty.
