CIVIL WAR VETERAN

The son of Henry & Claris (Marshall) Keffer, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 6 as a private with Co. H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg. He also enlisted in Hampton, Adams County, August 27, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 1 as a private with Co. I, 205th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865.

Between enlistments, he married Mary Margaret Alwine and fathered Anna Mary (b. 03/17/65 - married Joseph Eckenrode) and Agnes "Aggie" (b. @1868 - married a Chambers). Mary Margaret's status is unknown, but he married Mary Yake and fathered Mary Lucy (b. 03/03/80 - married George Rutter). Mary's status is unknown, but he married Agnes Hemler in 1882 apparently without issue.

In 1890, he lived in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, and in 1907, in McSherrystown, where he died from "arteriosclerosis" and "chronic nephritis" with a "cerebral hemorrhage" listed as a contributing factor.
