Verdy grew up on a farm with his four siblings in Almelund, Chisago County, MN. He inherited his father's farm and worked as a laborer and a farmer all his life.
In his youth, Verdy was very athletic. Family members state he was a talented ice skater who raced in many contests at the Almelund ice rink and everyone would come to watch. Some said he was so good, he could have joined the Ice Follies. He was always in demand for hockey games. Verdy was described by those who knew him as "very cocky." As a teenager, he once drove through Almelund at "100 miles an hour and riled up the local residents with his shenanigans."
Verdy served in WWII and married Yvonne Raddatz. Verdy and Vonnie had one child.
Verdy was preceded in death by his dearly beloved brother Duane, parents, Lawrence and Pearl, wife, Yvonne, and a sister, Valencia Ann Erickson.
