FARMINGDALE - The death of Sgt. Richard J. Goggin, 24, in Vietnam April 26, has been reported by the U.S. Army to his parents. He was born April 18, 1947, in Gardiner, the son of William G. and Thelma Eye Goggin.
Sgt. Goggin graduated from Hall-Dale High School in 1965 and from the University of Maine, Augusta, in 1969. He was a charter member of Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity.
In high school he played basketball, football and baseball and was captain of the football team. He was also a member of the Key Club and its president his senior year.
He play baseball with the Gardiner Little League, Baby Ruth League and the American Legion team. For eight years he was a delivery boy for the Portland Sunday Telegram.
He left for service with the U.S. Army Sept 9, 1969.
Suvivors include his father of Hallowell; his mother of Farmingdale; two brothers, Chester and Kenneth Goggin of Farmingdale; a sister, Miss Donna Goggin of Farmingdale; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Vera Goggin of Farmingdale; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Eye of Litchfield; two uncles, an aunt, a nephew and seven cousins.

GARDINER - Military services for Sgt. Richard J. Goggin were held Monday morning at 53 Brunswick Ave., by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) William A Dunstan, Brig. Chap. Me. S.G., officiating.
Bearers were Manton Emerson Jr., Willian Ellis, Brian Skehan, Stephen Canpono, Richard Perkins and Sp4 Derek Hopkins.
Burial was in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta where Chaplain Dunston said committal prayers. The 104th Transportation Co. of Fort Devens, Mass., supplied the honor guard and the honorary bearers who folded the flag. The bugler, Sp4 Rugne was from the 18th Army Band of Fort Devens.
