Donald Lee Corl was the only child of Otho Lee and Maude Fisher.

DONALD L. CORL, age 67, died in Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Nashville, Tennessee at 7:30 P.M. on the evening of September 17, 1999 of complications from Multiple Myeloma Cancer and Alzheimer' s disease. Donald is survived by his wife, Orchard Hord Corl of Concord, North Carolina, who resides in Brentwood, Tennessee, three children: David L. Corl and wife Kathy Bastie Corl, Russell Allen Corl of Houston, Texas, and Meredith Orchard Corl from Houston, who lives in Brentwood, Tennessee. He has two grandsons living in Houston, Ryan and Evan Corl. He has two aunts living in Concord: North Carolina: Mrs. Edna Fisher and Mrs. Elizabeth Talbert and various cousins in North Carolina. His brother and sister in law are: Edwin V. Hord and Mary Hunter Hord in Houston, Texas and John K Hord in Ocean City, Maryland. His mother in law is Mary Orchard Hord living in Brentwood, Tennessee. Donald was born in Concord, North Carolina on May 14, 1932, the only son of Maude Fisher Corl and Otho Lee Corl. Donald was baptized and confirmed at the United Reform Church of Christ in Concord. He was an honor student, band member and dramatic player at Concord High School. He graduated in 1950 and attended Davidson College for one year, then attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he was Phi Beta Kappa, pledged Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and received a B. S. in Chemical Engineering. Donald and Orchard were married in 1955 and moved to New Jersey, where Donald accepted a job in the Exxon Refinery in Linden, New Jersey. During his career at Exxon he also worked at the Bayonne Refinery. In 1966, the family was sent to Houston, Texas, the home office of Exxon, where Donald served as a Senior Staff Manager, wrote speeches for the President of Exxon, and worked on the Long Range Planning Committee of the oil company. He was with Exxon for 37 years and retired in August of 1992. Donald also served as a corporal in the United States Army in Edgewood, Maryland 1956 and was released from training due to his critical position with the oil company. A tireless church worker, Donald served two different terms as President of the Council at Memorial Drive Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas and sang in the choir for most of the 32 years he lived in Houston and participated in other committees and groups within the church. While living in New Jersey he belonged to the choir in Calvary Lutheran Church in Cranford, New Jersey and served as a Sunday School teacher and other capacities there. He also served as Scout Master in Houston and worked with the Junior Achievement Program. Mr. Cori had been diagnosed with cancer in 1992 and shortly thereafter developed Alzheimer' s disease. He had been in nursing homes since 1996. Until his illness, he trained and excelled as a marathon runner. He has hundreds of trophies and medals for races and marathons won in New York Marathon, Boston Marathon, Chicago, Detroit, Deluth, Dallas and Houston, to name a few of the major races in which he participated over the years. Mr. Corl was a most kind, considerate, loving and supportive husband, a patient and understanding father and compassionate Christian man. He will be missed by family and friends. Memorial Services in celebration of his life on earth will be held on Wednesday, September 22nd at 11:00 AM at Memorial Drive Lutheran Church at 12211 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024, Rev. A. R. Sam Koenning officiating. The family asks that remembrances be contributed to National Institute for Cancer Research, P. O. Box 97167, Washington, D. C., 20090-7167 and Alzheimer Disease Research, 15825 Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rochelle, Maryland 20850 or any local Cancer or Alzheimer's Group. Interment will be at the Corl family plot at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord, North Carolina at a later date.
