Gideon was born while the family was on the move from the Civil War, and seemed to keep traveling.
Born in Iowa, he was one of the few siblings not having memories of Tennessee. He is listed in Box Elder, Nebraska in an education census in 1881,also 1886, then most of his movements are found as the McCook Tribune notes his visits. He was found in 1892 in California, registered to vote in San Bernadino. 22 years old, born in Iowa, a farmer, 6 foot, residence Mojave, Halleck post office. He married after 1900, and his family seems to have landed in Scott County, AR.

Funeral service for Gideon F. Campbell, 83, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the community church at Bates (AR). Burial was at Bates cemetery under direction of Rice Funeral home.
