KNOXVILLE - Clifford L. Davis, 80, 800 N. Market St., Knoxville, died at 7:57 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
He was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Schuyler County, the son of Frank and Bertha Powell Davis. He married Patricia J. Shores on Dec. 13, 1947, in Rushville. She preceded him in death on Jan. 11, 2008.
Surviving is a son, Gary Davis of Monmouth; two grandchildren, Jennifer Davis of Moline, and Shawna (and Bill) White and two great-grandchildren, Emma White and Aaron White, all of Colchester; two brothers, Irvin (and Ethel) Davis of Canton and Lawrence (and Joyce) Davis of Pekin; a sister, Inez Hayden of Plymouth; and a daughter-in-law, Connie Davis of rural Monmouth. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Jean McNeff, in March 2005, a son-in-law, George McNeff in March 2008, and a brother, Robert Davis.
Clifford was a laborer at the former Maytag Corporation in Galesburg for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was raised and educated in Schuyler County, attending Brooklyn High School in Brooklyn. He moved to the Galesburg area in 1953. He lived in Florida for many years before moving back to Avon and finally settling back in Galesburg.
He was a member of Federated Church of Avon, a 50-year member of Abingdon American Legion and was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader.
He served in the Army from 1945 to 1946 during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines.
Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, in Avon Cemetery. The Rev. Milton Cruz will officiate. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
