David Wendell Gelatt Sr. of Honesdale died Tuesday at home. His wife, the former Esther Pennay, died Aug. 7, 1999.

Born Feb. 21, 1927, in North Jackson, son of the late Ralph D. and Ethel Conrad Gelatt of North Jackson, he was a 1945 graduate of New Milford High School. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific theater.

He formerly worked as an artificial inseminator for Northeastern Breeders Association and then Sire Power. He later retired as a custodian from the Wayne Highlands School District.

He was a member of the Tabernacle Bible Church, was formerly a member of the Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle and was very proud of his re-baptism by submersion in 2007. He was a lifetime member of the Honesdale Fire Department 3 and the Marine Corps League. He was an avid antique car buff and was frequently seen in former years driving his Model T Ford around town.

He went to be with Lord Tuesday afternoon, April 5. He passed away peacefully at home with his family present.

Surviving are a son, David Jr. and Tina Klinkiewicz Gelatt, Honesdale; two daughters, Kathleen Milenkowic, Brookeville, Md.; and Diane and husband, Jan Gibbons, Hawley; nine grandchildren, Eric and wife, Tracie; Marissa, Lauren, Karly and Kristy Gelatt; Marko and Marlena Milenkowic; and Chelsea and Kiley Gibbons; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Evan Gelatt; nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Milton and Charles Gelatt; and a sister, Esther Davis.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Tabernacle Bible Church, 455 Grove St., Honesdale, with burial following at Gelatt Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday, 6 to 9 p.m., at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St., Honesdale. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart or Tabernacle Bible Church.
