He moved from Granville Co. to Raleigh, Wake Co., NC sometime before his marriage to Margaret Love Walker on 20 Aug 1857. He was a Tailor in Granville but was a House Painter in Raleigh and employed many of his family members. After his death, his sons, William Walter Parish I and Iowa Solen Parish continued his business. Of their 7 children, 4 lived to adulthood: William Walter Parish I; Emma Jane Parish Woodward; Iowa Solen Parish; and Samuel Matthew Parish, Jr.

On 27 Feb 1862, Samuel M. Parish enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. E, 47th Regt. of the North Carolina State Troops. Between April and September 1863, he was transferred to Raleigh as a clerk under Col. Peter Mallet, Commadant of Conscripts, Provisional Army CSA under Gen. Braxton Bragg. He was promoted to 1st Lt. during this time and served in this capacity until the end of the War.

In 1886, he was the Master of the Hiram Masonic Lodge #40.
