The 1850 US Census list James parents as Thomas and Sarah Durham; however his death certificate identifies John/Ino as his father and Sarah Morrison as his mother. His siblings include Columbus, John, William and Mary.

James married Columbia Ann Durham on December 25, 1873 in Roane County Tennessee. Known children to James and Columbia are daughters Bessie (Kelly), Stella (Hicks) and Dixie (Kelly) and sons Frank Lee and Chester. They also had an unnamed infant.

There are several civil war records for a James S. Durham serving for the Confederate Army. It is not confirmed that this James S. Durham is the subject of this memorial

According to James's death certificate the burial location is Durham Cemetery. Durham Cemetery has been canvassed and no marker is found. Based on past experience, many Tennessee Death Certificates list incorrect burial sites or identify a community as the cemetery rather than the actual cemetery, itself.
