He was the "godfather" to dozens of Eagle Scouts, serving as scoutmaster or other BSA leader longer than anybody can remember. He received BSA's Silver Beaver award.
He was a gifted athlete, earning his way through college via athletic scholarships in track and boxing. He was exceptionally conscious of his own physical health and remained in top condition until overtaken with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Karen (Thurber) of Boise; two sons, Jon (Sheri) of Orem, Utah, Tim (Channing) of Stuttgard, Germany; and two daughters, Debra (Bret) and Jan (David), both of Bountiful, Utahj; and 14 grandchildren. [newspaper obituary omitted last names of married daughters]
Presiding at his funeral was Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. VJF was Dale's mentor and greatest fan.
