L. LaRue Godfrey, age 93, passed away peacefully July 20, 2008, in Mission Viejo, Calif., where he resided for the past four years with his daughter. He was a longtime resident of Downey, Idaho.
LaRue was born March 18, 1915, in Clarkston, Utah, to John Morris and Margaret Priscilla Buttars Godfrey. He was the fifth of eight children. He was raised on the family farm in Clarkston. He attended North Cache High School, where he graduated in 1933. He attended Utah State University, graduating in 1939, with a degree in economics. He worked fighting fires in Logan Canyon as part of the CCC. In 1954, he received a master's degree in education from Utah State.
He married Laura Ann Stewart August 2, 1941, on the day she graduated from nursing school. Two days later, LaRue reported to Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City as the first drafted member of the Army from Cache County. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple.
He spent four years serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, Fort Lawton, Seattle, and spent 18 months in Juneau, Alaska. After being separated for their first year of marriage, Laura joined him in Seattle.
After the war, they settled in Downey, where LaRue taught sixth grade at Downey Elementary for over 30 years. They adopted four children, one boy and three girls. Laura passed away in August of 1994.
LaRue enjoyed coin collecting, fishing, and gardening. He loved raising roses and gladiolas, and had a large vegetable garden. But his children and grandchildren were the joy of his life.
He was a member of the LDS Church, and enjoyed serving in many assignments, including 18 years as the financial clerk for the Downey Ward.
