Son of James Nelson Dillen and his first wife Margaret "Maggie" Wilson.
Enlisted in the Confederate Army in February 1863; participated in the Battle of Mansfield, Louisiana in 1864. Later, he joined Company A in Terry's Texas Cavalry Regiment. When the war ended, he became a farmer.
Married first to Rufus Elizabeth Watts on February 22, 1876 in Rusk County. They had five children:

Elizabeth Dillen died giving birth to boy and girl twins in 1886. Andrew married second to his sister-in-law Martha Ann Watts on September 21, 1886.
Andrew and Martha Ann Dillen had four children:

Dola George Dillen
Andrew died in 1895, leaving Martha Ann a young widow with seven children to raise.
