Retired Farmer Had Suffered With Stomach Trouble for More Than a Year- Will be Buried Sunday at Hopewell.
John W. Beard, 74, a retired farmer, died at his home, 1205 Washington avenue, at two o'clock this morning, following a long illness with stomach trouble. He had been in failing health for a year and his decline had been gradual until a week ago, when his condition became critical and for the past few days his death had been momentarily expected. While deceased was a native of the county, he was known better to the older residents of the city, owing to his retiring disposition. He was not affiliated with any lodge or secret society. He was a man who enjoyed the friendship of many people and was a citizen of whom all should be proud. He retired from the farm about twenty years ago and moved into Frankfort, but he has always took an interest in farm life and was abreast of the times on everything pertaining to the life of the rural citizen. Until his health failed he was active in the management of his extensive land holdings in the Beard neighborhood, northeast of town.
He was born on the old home place, September, 1848, the son of Jacob and Mary Ann Beard. All his life was spent on the farm and he grew to young manhood in the community which bears his name. He was united in marriage to Miss India Thomas, of the same neighborhood. No children ever came to bless this union and aside from one brother and nephews and nieces, the good wife is the sole survivor. The surviving relatives are: The wife, one brother, Cyrus Beard, of Rockfield, Ind.; Elmer Beard, of Flint, Mich.; Oakley Quick, of this city; James E. Quick, of Kokomo, nephews, and Mrs. Fred Miller, of Rockfield; Mrs. Cora B. Wilson, of Minneapolis, nieces. Funeral services will be held from the residence Sunday morning at 10 o'clock and burial will be in the Hopewell cemetery, northeast of the city.
