Max Sweeney was a midget and sprint car driver with 20+ years experience primarily in the Southern California area. On Friday evening, June 22, 1979, Max was competing in the midget races held at Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif. Max's car ran over the wheel of another car and started barrel rolling following an aborted start. Max was removed unconscious from his car and taken to San Pedro Hospital. Max remained in a coma or semi-conscious state for almost 3 years, finally passing away on May 1, 1982
