Harry William Dawson, 86, of Hayward, passed away peacefully on Jan. 16, at the Minneapolis Veterans Medical Center.

Harry William Dawson was born on Sept. 25, 1921 in Amberg, Wis., the son of Ora and Jeannette (Bowen) Dawson. After graduating from high school, Harry enlisted with the U.S. Marines on May 20, 1942. His service during World War II included tours in the South Pacific for which he received two Purple Hearts for being wounded in combat, the first on January 26, 1943 during the Battle of Guadalcanal, and the second on July 30, 1944 during the Battle of Guam. Harry returned stateside and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on Sept. 25, 1945. He also received the Armed Forces Honorable Service Lapel Button.

Harry met his future wife, Pansy Fox, in Indiana and they were married on Dec. 23, 1945 in South Bend, Ind. After a fishing trip to the area, Harry and Pansy moved to Hayward in 1960 where they ran a bait shop on Round Lake and a painting business. They later bought their home on Highway B where each resided until their death. Until his later years, Harry spent most of his free time bowling and fishing and he was always the first to test the ice with his truck. A Vikings' fan in Packers' country, he loved visiting with his family and will always be remembered by his great-grandchildren as Grandpa Dawson. He was a member of the VFW, a proud supporter of U.S. Military personnel, and seldom left home without his "Once a Marine always a Marine" ball cap. He was wounded 2 times and held 2 purple hearts, both times were at Guadalcanal. He will be missed by all and fondly remembered as a man who always let you know where you stood.

Harry is survived by a son, Larry of Minnesota; five grandchildren, Charles, Greg, Matt, Brent and Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Mallory and Reagan. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pansy; his daughter, Chery Hendricks; one sister, Violet; and one brother, Oren.

Funeral: At his request the family will not have a formal service but would like to invite anyone wishing to pay their respects to attend a brief graveside honor ceremony to be held this spring at a date and time to be announced later. Military rites will be accorded by the State of Wisconsin Military Honors Team.
