Death: Sep. 19, 1957

Winnie Etta Davis was born in Pawnee County, Nebraska, December 19, 1869. The daughter of William and Margaret Jane Larkins, she came in 1871 with her parents and three older brothers to a homestead on Rose Creek 4 miles south of Chester.

She grew to womanhood in Liberty township, where she attended school at Liberty Center. Here as a young girl she was converted and attended Sunday School. For many years she taught a class of young folks and many of them still remember her and her interest in them.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Davis on December 31, 1889. To this union were born seven children, six daughters, Alice, Mae, Amie, Margaret, Helen and Leota, and one son, Jay. She moved with her family to Chester in October, 1925, where she made her home until October three years ago. She then moved to Alma to make her home with her daughter. She transferred to the Methodist Church of Chester in 1934 and worked very faithfully as long as her health permitted. She was a strong supporter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and spent much time working for its cause.

She became ill on August 18 and passed away in the Alma Hospital on September 19, 1957, at the age of 87 years and 9 months. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; one son, Jay; and one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Eickman. She was also the last surviving member of a family of nine children. She is survived by five daughters: Mrs. Walter Moxham of Chester; Mrs. Mae Lane of Alma; Mrs. Amie Jeffries of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Clarence Palmer of Chester; and Mrs. Art Glasgow of Powell, Wyo.; 33 grandchildren; 94 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Sept. 22, at the Chester Methodist Church with Rev. Duane Hutchison officiating. A quartet, Frank Larkins, Max Larkins, Donald Eickman and Neal Eickman, sang accompanied by Mrs. Robert Weary at the organ. The casketbearers were Dean Lane, Philip Palmer, James Munnis, Dale Eickman, Gerald Moxham and Wilbur Davis, all grandsons of the deceased. Interment was in the Chester Cemetery. Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
