A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Pink and Margaret Burnette Smith. He retired in 1966 from Southern Railway. He was a member of Railway Union and Brotherhood of Railroad Carmen of America.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Mary Charles Smith Wild of Cleveland, Ohio; son, Harold Dewayne Smith of Asheville, N. C.; and two infant sons; C. B. Smith and James Dallas Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Lassie Martin Smith, a daughter,Jessie Smith Wild of Kingsport, Tennessee and a son, Hubert Smith of Asheville. He had 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. T. A. Holder will officiate. Entombment will be in Ashelawn Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
