PVT Louis Henry Chaplain
Birth: Sep. 7, 1893
St. Bernard Parish
Louisiana, USA
Death: Nov. 8, 1918, France

Unit: 128th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division

Basic Background:
Louis was tall and slender, with blue eyes and brown hair. Before the war he had been a farmer employed by Phillips Land Company, in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.

Never Forgotten:
His younger brother, John Maximillian Chaplain, also served in the Great War. Several years after the war, John married and his only son was named "John Louis Chaplain", after both his father and the uncle he never got to know. Known as a great story-teller, Louis's brother surely shared, though, many stories about Louis with John Louis.

Service in France:
Louis and his family spoke French, which one may imagine came in handy during the war. His brother John is said to have visited family in France during the war, but it is unknown if Louis did as well. (John had been a motorcyclist for one of the first aero squadrons, which may have allowed for the flexibility of a family reunion while serving.)

French Roots:
One of Louis grandfathers, Pierre Charles Louis Chaplain, had been born in Evreaux, Haute-Normandie, France. The other, August Delacourt, was from Manche, France. August's wife, Catherine Weinzettel Delacourt, had emigrated from Saarbrucken, which had been part of France until a a few years before her birth. It is presumed she spoke French, as well.
