St. Louis City
John is the son of Thomas Searle Sr. DD and Sarah E. (Gelpin) Crowe. Grandson of John Finley Sr. DD and Esther (Alexander) Crowe. Who added the 'e' to their surname. Great Grandson of Sgt. Benjamin and Ann (Cregg/Gragg) Crow.
Not to much is known of his life. His father was a Rev. lost a child at one year of age and his wife later same year, with a daughter still living. Married Sarah 3 years later and they had 7 children with John being the last. In 1860 the family had left Indiana and were now in Ohio. By 1870 they were back in Indiana. All family history has him being born in Indiana, have no idea as to when they left Ohio, so who knows just where he was born.
His mother died when he was about 3 in 1868, then his father died in 1871. He was raised by Prof. Garritt of Hanover, a dear and trusted friend of the family.
In 1904 he married for the first time. Being united in marriage to Matha M. Shackleford in Missouri, she was 10 years younger than him. They had only one known child, Martha A. Crowe born 17 October 1908.
1910 they are in St. Louis. Her parents are listed above them in census. He was a bookkeeper by trade.
June of 1918 it was discovered that he had Pancreatic Cancer, which took his life just 2 months later at the age of 52 yrs, 10 mo's and 7 days.
His sister Esther, who had not married and was living in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri gave his family information and signed his Death Certificate.
I do not know what became of Martha. In 1920 she and their daughter were still in St. Louis. Have not been able to find her after that, so am guessing she must of married again. Their daughter Martha A. married Allen Benson, and lived until the age of 83.
He is my 2nd cousin 3x removed.
