IN THE SHADOWS
MRS. MARGARET YAGER
Just as the sunset shadows over the Cucamonga peaks were lengthening last night as she had watched them for 60 years, death stole in with the twilight and called for the spirit of Mrs. Margaret Yager, one of the mothers of the valley. The end came at her home on the Rialto bench, just at the top of the Fourth Street hill, where 50 years ago, Mrs. Yager and members of her family had taken up a homestead, reclaimed the land and for the half century it had been her home.
Her long illness had been marked by unusual devotion on the part of her daughters, three of whom have divided the time for years and sometimes two or three of them would be here at a time, coming from distant homes that they might render filial duty and care for their mother in her last days. For she would be contented no place else.
Mrs. Yager was a native of Glasgow, Scotland, born there 84 years ago. As a young woman, she came to California and for 60 years had been a resident of the valley, 50 years of that time on the land where she died. She was a woman to whom home meant everything; it was her sphere and beyond it there was little that interested her, and even in declining years the attractions of the homes of members of her family could not take the place of that which had been her own. So the daughters came to keep vigil with her to the end. At her bedside as the spirit took its flight last night were Mrs. N.J. Levinson and Mrs. H.H. Herdman of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. George Ferguson of Fresno. She is also survived by another daughter, Miss Winifred Yager, of Portland, and one son, W.G. Mogeau of Alaska.
Also she is survived by two brothers, former Mayor John A. Henderson of this city, and D.G. Henderson of Etiwanda, and by one sister, Mrs. W.B. Roberds, of San Jacinto.
The obsequies will be from the chapel of the Mark B. Shaw Company Thursday at 4 o’clock p.m. with interment in Mountain View cemetery.
