Claire, 86, passed peacefully away on April 17, 2007 from heart failure at his home in Alpine, Utah surrounded by loved ones.


Claire, the oldest son in a family of nine children, was born April 24, 1921 in Millville, Utah to Joseph and Maggie Neves.


He married his sweetheart, Faye Hill, on June 24, 1944 and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on 13 August 1947. His family was the joy of his life and he enjoyed spending time with them.


Claire is survived by his wife, Faye; their six children, Sheri Sallenbach (CA); Linda Pehrson (Roy); Shauna Storrs (Greg); Jackie Buie (Todd); Clay Neves (Janae); Jill May (Cleon); their 25 grandchildren; and their 34 great-grandchildren. Claire is also survived by his sister, Beverly Gomm; and brothers, Bart, Roese and Dewey Neves. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Blaine Clifford Neves, Bessie Alene Trolson, Theo Faye Goodman, and Naudine Howell.


Claire served in the US Navy in the South Pacific Theatre on the Destroyer, USS Buchanan as a Carpenter's Mate and was involved in many battles. He had the honor of being aboard the Missouri when the Japanese Surrender was signed. He was a Journeyman Carpenter and graduated from the University of Utah with a Civil Engineering Degree.


He supervised several prominent construction projects during his career including the Shakespearian Auditorium at the College of Southern Utah, renovation and additions to the Salt Lake Temple, and building of its chapel, new wings of the Boise VA Hospital, and upgrading the Salt Lake VA Hospital to an earthquake-resistant code.


After serving many years as the Chief Engineer of the Seattle, Boise, and Salt Lake VA Hospitals, Claire retired from the Veteran's Administration as a Regional Fire and Safety Inspector of all Northwestern VA facilities. Claire was a faithful, active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served a mission with his wife, Faye, in the San Francisco Bay Area.


He was an avid reader; loved the out-of-doors, hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping. He loved walking with his wife, his dog, and his grand-children. Whoever was available was taken for a walk.


The location for viewings and funeral has been changed from the Mountainville Chapel (200 North 100 East, Alpine) to the Matterhorn Chapel (285 North Matterhorn Drive, Alpine). Maps and directions to the Matterhorn Chapel will be issued in the parking lot of the Mountainville Chapel. Viewings: Friday from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. preceding the funeral which is at 11:00 a.m.
A military graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery, 3115 East Bengal Boulevard (7800 South), Cottonwood Heights.
