Believed to be one of four sons of Joseph Maria Lingg, Elijah arrived in the U.S. with his family sometime after 1814, probably through Philadelphia. He first appeared on record in Perry County, Indiana on 7 May 1827, when he married Susannah Huff. They had six children of record: Jesse, Mary Jane, Joseph M., John Lafeyette, Anna M. and Samuel Newton Link. In 1840 Elijah's family was living in Pike County, Indiana with an older male believed to be Joseph Lingg.
Susannah died soon after Sep 1844, probably from the birth of her son Samuel. On 24 Mar 1847 Elijah married Mary Cummings (whose sister Elizabeth married Elijah's brother Conrad in 1844), daughter of William Cummings and Sophia Lanman and widow of John A. Ramsey, and they had six more children: Sapha A., Elijah E., William N., Emma Jane, Amanda and Franklin S. Link.
In 1853 the family moved to Taylor Township, Appanoose County, Iowa.
