James Edward Long was the 11th child born to William Riley Long and Elizabeth Blankenship Long. He was born August 19, 1877 in Ashland Kentucky. His Grandparents were Henry Long who died February 10, 1836 and Catherine Long who died in 1883. His maternal grandparents were Richard Blankenship ( Mar 6, 1806 to Mar 9 1849) and Susan Blankenship (B. 1813, D. Aug 17, 1869).

Ed attended Kansas State University in 1899 and received his doctor of Veternarian medicine in the spring of 1900. He was married on Nov 2, 1899 to Stella Lodicia Cox. Her parents were James Jesse Cox and Mary Elizabeth Whitehurst Cox. Ed was veteranerian farmer and he and Stella owned and operated a grocery store in Preston for several years. They lived in the town home for most of the year moving to the farm two miles west of town for the summer. Ed died in the Hutchinson Ks. hospital Apr 4, 1933 at the age of 55 from complications of a bleeding stomach ulcer.

Funeral services will be held in the Methodist church at 2:30 for Edward Long of Preston, who died in Grace Hospital in Hutchinson yesterday afternoon at 12:10. Mr. long, who was 55 years of age, became ill saturday and died less than an hour after he entered the hospital. Ulcers of the stomach caused his death. Mr Long was born in Kentucky but had lived in this community for a number of years. he is survived by his widow, two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Alfred Guthrie and Ansil Long, both of Preston and Edna Maye and Ernest Long both of the home. Three children preceded him in death. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. C.S. Hutsell Harper and burial will be at Preston.
