Private Titus served with Co E, 20th Maine Infantry during the Civil War. After the war, he was posted in northeast Texas with Co. C, 20th US Infantry, at the army camp near Mount Pleasant. He was part of a detachment with two other soldiers and a Freedmen's Bureau agent that attempted to arrest the notorious Reconstruction-era desperado, Cullen M. Baker. During the ensuing gun battle, Baker fired a load of buckshot at Titus, killing him instantly.
