Mary Sim Nelson Neill

Mary Sim Nelson was the daughter of Attorney General John Nelson, who was a US Representative, for Maryland's 4th district 1821-1823. He was Ambassador to Italy appointed Charg'e d'affaires to Two Sicilies 1831-1832. Was appointed Attorney General of the United States by President Tyler, 1 Jul 1842, serving through the end of the Tyler administration. He served as Secretary of State ad interim for about a month after the sudden death of Abel P. Upshur.

Mary Sim was the granddaughter of Brigadier General Roger Nelson, a Captain in the Revolutionary War; U.S. Representative from Maryland; Judge of the Upper District of Maryland and one of the original members of the Society of Cincinnati, Maryland Society. Roger Nelson married 1st Mary Brooke Sim and 2nd Elizabeth Harrison. Mary Sim Nelson is descended from Nelson's 1st wife Mary Brooke Sim.

Her mother was Frances Harriott Burrows, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Commandant William Ward Burrows, USMC, the first Commandant of the reconstituted Marine Corps., and also an Honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati, Pennsylvania Society.

Mary Sim Nelson married Alexander "Alex" Neill II, on April 19, 1837 at Christ Church Parish Chase & St. Paul St, Protestant Episcopal, Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland. They made their home in the Neill mansion on 135 West Washington St., Hagerstown, Maryland. The Neill home is now known as the Miller House and serves as the headquarters of the Washington County Historical Society.

Alexander Neill II was the son of Alexander Neill Sr. (1778-1859) and Sarah Owen (1781-1843), Sarah Owen was the daughter of Robert and Sarah/Sally (Swearingen) Owen. He was the grandson of William Neill (1754-1785), who emigrated from Ireland, settled in Baltimore, Maryland, and married Isabella Callender (1756-1826). He was also the great grandson of Adam Neill (1684-1762) and Janet (Holmes) Neill of County Antrim, Ireland. Alexander Neill was elected member of Maryland State Constitutional Convention in 1850.

Alexander and Mary Sim (Nelson) Neill had eight children;

3. Alexander Neill III, born 5 Aug 1844; died 14 Jun 1910; married Elinor "Ellen" Loughridge

4. Mary Chandler Neill, born 3 May 1850, died; 19 Mar 1854

5. Isabella Callender Neill, born 23 Jul 1853; died 30 Aug 1862

6. John Nelson Neill, born 31 Aug 1855; died in California

7. Rosa Nelson Neill, born 13 May 1858; died 18 Mar 1902; married Dr. Abner Howard Osburn

8. Dr. William Neill, born 18 Feb 1860; died 9 Apr 1925; married Mary Virginia "Jeannie" Simmons
