He married Bessie Pearl Boydstun in 1923 and they had two children that lived and one daughter that died.: BESSIE Juanita and Henry David Cochran,(1928-1999) LANORA Cochran who was born Aug 21 1931 and died Sept. 10, 1931. Bessie was a good mother to Byrds children. After Bessie's death he married three more times to: Cora Hogan, Opal Stueve and in 1968 married Rosa Aveline Richards.

One of Byrds descendants tells a story of how, when living in New Mexico, Byrd, having the flu faked his own death, and disappeared, because of some "gun trouble" with some gunmen who lived there. There was even a funeral held. That is when he moved to Stonewall County, and his family name was changed from Cochrain to Cochran. There is more to the story, which is family legend, in the book, "Stonewall County, Between the Forks of the Brazos."
There is supposed to be a book written by (Byrd?) someone in the family "Cochrans of Dead Man's Corner". I don't have a copy of that.
