Louisa Bell was the widow of Samuel Bell, deceased, at one time one of Reading's most prominent citizens. She was of a quiet and retiring disposition and widely known and much esteemed.
She was born in Fayette county, Pa.. Her father, Jacob Bowman, was one of the foremost of those enterprising men who developed the great resources of western Pennsylvania.
Her mother was Isabella Lowry.
In 1819 Louisa married Samuel Bell, one of Reading's best known merchants and businessmen. In 1859 he moved to Philadelphia and died there in 1861. Louisa returned to Reading and resided here ever since. They had 8 children, five of whom are living: Samuel Bell, Philadelphia; G.B. Bell, New york; J. Lowrie Bell, Philadelphia; William A. Bell, Philadelphia; and Mrs Horatio Trexler, of Reading. One of their sons, Major J. Bowman Bell, of the U.S. Army, was killed in battle at Stone River, Tn., December 1862
