Residence Spotstylvania County.
Enlisted for the war on 3/13/1862 at Fredericksburg, VA, by Captain Alexander, he was mustered into Captain Alexander's Company, Virginia Artillery as a Private. The Company subsequently became "M" Co. VA 55th Infantry on 6/10/1862.
Wounded in right hand by artillery shell 5/3/1863 Chancellorsville, VA.; returned 9/1863.
Detailed 12/29/1863 to end of war at Gordonsville, VA as Provost Guard per Special Order 322, Northern Virginia Department, order by General R.E. Lee.

Postwar he lived in Brokenburg, Spotsylvania County, VA.
Due to his wound, where 1 finger was torn away, another permanently stiff, and the others injured and painful, his right hand was disabled to the point where it was deemed useless by his doctor. He then applied for a Confederate Disability Pension in 1879. He was approved for $60.00 in 1882.

The 55th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by the addition of four companies to W.N. Ward's "Essex and Middlesex" Battalion of Virginia Volunteers. It was assigned to General Field's, Heth's, H.H. Walker's, and Barton's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia.
It sustained 110 casualties at Chancellorsville.
In February, 1865, the 47th and 55th Regiments were consolidated.
