Rev. Francis S. Skalski passed away October 20, 2010 at the age of 81. He was born November 21, 1928 in Detroit, to Steve & Frances Skalski.

Fr. Skalski attended St. Mary's Orchard Lake and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth.
He was ordained to the Priesthood June 2, 1956. Fr. Skalski was an Associate Pastor of St. Florian in Hamtramck (1956-1960), St. John Cantius in Detroit (1960-1965), and St. Ladislaus in Hamtramck (1965-1969).

He served as Pastor of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Detroit for over 36 years (1971-2007).

Father Skalski's tenure as Pastor will long be remembered for the pastoral care and leadership he provided.
Father Skalski will also be remembered for the devotion he gave to the parish, and his successful efforts to keep Saint Hyacinth open and viable. Father would not take credit for his accomplishments, rather he would always say "I only have two hands, it is the many helpers that made this possible".
During difficult times and the closing of Detroit area parishes, Saint Hyacinth remained a stronghold for Polonia and a gem on the eastside of Detroit to practice our Catholic faith.
Father Skalski will also be remembered for his strong dedication to the Polish Heritage that earned him the nickname "Bishop of Poletown".
Father's sermons often centered on the strength of family and need the appreciate others. Qualities he continuously practiced.

Beloved son of the late Steve and Frances Skalski.

Dear brother of Stella (Jim) Przybylski, Richard Skalski and the late Roman (the late Frances) Skalski.

Dear Uncle of many loving nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Known to parishioners as the Bishop of Poletown and known for his efforts to preserve St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, where he served for 36 years, the Rev. Francis S. Skalski died Wednesday. He was 81.

Born in 1928 in Detroit to Steve and Frances Skalski, the Rev. Skalski attended St. Mary's Orchard Lake and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth.
He was ordained in 1956 and was an associate pastor from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s at St. Florian in Hamtramck, St. John Cantius in Detroit, St. Ladislaus in Hamtramck and Our Lady Queen of Heaven in Detroit. From 1971 until 2007, he was pastor of St. Hyacinth on Detroit's east side.

"Father would not take credit for his accomplishments, rather he would always say, 'I only have two hands; it is the many helpers that made this possible,'" Joseph Jaczkowski, head of St. Hyacinth's parish council, wrote in a message about the Rev. Skalski on the church's Web site.
His brother James Jaczkowski, 62, of Washington Township said he always stressed faith, country and the old country -- Poland. He said the Rev. Skalski also supported Poland's Solidarity movement in the 1980s.
"He was a good hero," Jaczkowski said. "He left us a wonderful legacy."

The Rev. Skalski is survived by his sister, Stella Przybylski; brother, Richard Skalski; nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visitation will be held 1-9 p.m. today and Sunday at Wasik Funeral Home-Warren Chapel, 11470 Thirteen Mile in Warren. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, 3151 Farnsworth in Detroit. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Monday at the church.
