Our beautiful & brave mother passed away on December 10, 2011 at the age of 95.
Maria Concepción Ortiz Cué (Conchita) was born in Havana, Cuba September 19, 1916 to Julio Ortiz Casanova and Concepción Galbis Ajuria .
After graduating from Notre Dame in Baltimore in 1940, Conchita returned to Havana and taught English until her marriage to Pedro A. Cué , M.D. in 1951. Their marriage was a romance. In 1960 they fled communist Cuba with their 5 children, the oldest 8 and youngest, 6 months. With the help, love & support of college friends and total strangers who quickly became the safety net for our family, we settled in Austin and forged a new life.
Mother forever paid forward all the love and support bestowed on her by helping refugees from wherever they came with the help of her "friend" Jake Pickle. A very happy and social creature, we'll remember her lovely smile and gracious, generous heart all of our days. We miss her already. And we know she is being welcomed in grand style.
Conchita was predeceased by her husband, Pedro A. Cué, her daughters, Maria Cué & Julia Cué; sister Ana Ortiz Diviñó; brother-in-law Prof. Jorge Luis Diviñó; and niece Cecilia Diviñó.
She is survived by daughter & favorite son-in-law, Teresa Cué & Mark Perkins; sons, Pedro A. Cué & wife Yamilia and Antonio M. Cué; grandchildren, Antonio M. Cué, Jr. and Jennifer LeForce; loved nieces & nephews & their spouses from the Cleveland, Prodoehl, Diviñó, Riddle, Cué & Lewis families and absolutely wonderful friends and neighbors. Thank you to the loving nursing assistants who cared for her.
A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, 3125 North Lamar.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery in Austin.
