Bogart - Marie Antoinette (DesPlaines) Marshall, 90, devoted and loving wife and mother, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, February 15, 2009, at Athens Heritage Home.
Born in Chicopee Falls, Mass., on June 14, 1918,
she was the daughter of the late Henri and Bernadette (Chapdelaine) DesPlaines, both Canadian natives.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sister Therese Gabriel (Jeanne) of the Sisters of Charity and Sister Marie Bernadetta (Juliette) of the Sisters of St. Anne and by a brother, Gabriel H. DesPlaines.
Marie attended the College of St. Elizabeth, Morristown, N.J., for two years before leaving school to care for her ailing father. She later worked at Steiger's Department Store, Springfield, Mass., as a cosmetic representative for Elizabeth Arden for two years and occasional model for the store. During WWII, she worked as a clerk in the legal department typing pool at Court Square and later was hand selected to become the secretary to a Lieutenant/Executive Officer.
In 1945, she was hired by an ambitious man starting his own insurance business the Hal W. Marshall Insurance Agency.
On September 1, 1954, she married her boss, and they moved their business to their home in West Springfield, Mass. After their daughter, Evelyn, was born in 1955, she devoted her life as a homemaker. Marie was fluent in French and was a gifted pianist, photographer and talented oil painter.
In 1991, she and Hal moved to their Dugspur, Va., farm (near the Marshall family home) where they lived until moving to Georgia in 2002 and residing at the Highland Hills Village.
In addition to her husband Hal, 96, Marie is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Hoult and her husband, Gene, of Cornelia, Ga.; stepdaughter, Carolyn Boyer and her husband, Rev. Keith Boyer, of Barrie, Ontario, Canada and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and other extended family members.
Always elegant and graceful, she will be missed by so many.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
