Hal W. Marshall 1912 - 2012 DUGSPUR, VA - Hal Wells Marshall, 100, beloved patriarch, passed away peacefully during a nap on Thursday, December 20, 2012 in Laurel Fork, VA.
He was born in Barren Springs, VA on November 29, 1912 to the late Grace Ruth (Sutphin) and Walter Washington Marshall and was the first of their nine children. They later relocated to his grandfather's farm in Dugspur, VA.
He was preceded in death by four siblings; June Mayberry (1978), Ray (2003), Ralph (2006), and Virgil Marshall (2008). In 1930, Hal attended Davidson College, NC, where he studied business, graduating in 1934. He was first employed by Kemper Insurance in Philadelphia, PA, later moving to New York City, Boston and Springfield, MA where he lived at the YMCA for 7 years. Determined to open his own insurance business, he hired his first secretary, the beautiful Marie A. DesPlaines of Chicopee Falls, who would later become his wife in 1954. Together they formed the Hal W. Marshall Insurance Agency, operating from their home at The Arms Apartments on Mercury Court in West Springfield, MA. It was a successful and well respected business in the community for almost 40 years. One of his oldest clients was Bruschi Bros. Construction Co. of Ludlow.
Hal was also a member of the Springfield Country Club for many years, as he was an avid golfer. In 1991, a few years after retirement, Hal and Marie moved to their Dugspur, VA farm (near the Marshall family home) where they lived until moving to GA in 2002, and residing at the St. Mary's Highland Hills Village near Athens, GA. Hal remained in GA after the death of Marie in 2009, his devoted wife of 54 years.
He then returned to VA in November 2012, where he celebrated his 100th birthday at Heritage Hall in Laurel Fork. He passed away 3 weeks later. He will be fondly remembered for many things besides his love of golf and the outdoors, but most especially will be his love and devotion to his family, his perseverance, enduring faith, and great sense of wit and humor.
Hal is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Hoult and her husband Gene of Cornelia, GA; and Carolyn Boyer (from his first marriage to Alma Cassidy) and her husband Rev. Keith Boyer of Barrie, Ontario, Canada; three grand-daughters, Andrea, Tobey and Kristin; and also six great-grandchildren who knew him affectionately as Great-Grandpa-Father.
He is also survived by four siblings; Bernard Marshall of New Holland, PA, Lucille Fleming of Honey Brook PA, Dee Thorsten of Eagleville, PA and Ruth Oliveira of Dugspur, VA, plus an extended family of nieces and nephews.
We all miss him very much. In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, he was laid to rest by the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in the Alfred Marshall Family Cemetery in Dugspur, VA.
A memorial is being held on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 1:00 pm in the fellowship hall of The First United Methodist Church in Hillsville, VA.
