Reverend and Doctor Reuel Keith was a descendant of Rev. James Keith (B. 1643 Scotland)
In addition to his many talents and education, he was also an author; his publications include the 1836 English translation of Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg's book Christologie des Alten Testements, or "Christology of the Old Testament." Reverend and Doctor Keith graduated from Vermont's Middlebury College in 1814, He studied for the ordained ministry under John Prentiss Kewly Henshaw and was ordained deacon on May 10, 1817 and became assistant to the rector at St. John's, Georgetown, (then District of Columbia), while at St. John's he helped to establish Christ Church, Washington, and served as its rector 1817 to 1820 when he resigned to accept the chair of humanity and history at William and Mary College in Williamsburg. October 1823 he became a professor at Virginia Theological Seminary. He received his Doctorate of Divinity degree from Vermont's Middlebury College in 1827. On June 30th, 1831 he traveled on horse back in pouring rain from Alexandria to Arlington and officiated at young Second Lieutenant Robert E. Lee's Wedding. (Later General, Commanding, Confederate States of America.) He remained at Virginia Theological Seminary until 1840 when due to poor health, he returned to Vermont.
