Army Pvt 1st Class Thomas was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. Thomas was on patrol when his unit engaged Taliban guerillas near the Pakistan border. He was one of six snipers who came under fire during the early hours of "Operation Mountain Viper." He died of injuries sustained during the fight that lasted more than an hour. Adam attended high school in La Plata, Missouri while living with his grandparents. Because serving in the military was a family tradition, no one was surprised when he decided to join the Army in August 2001. Adam last talked to his mother and sister by phone on the Wednesday before he was killed. He told them they were about to eat a good meal, were watching movies and not doing much.
