One of seven children of William Henry and Sarah _____ Hempstead (sic), she was adopted by Laura Dodge, a widow and maternity nurse. Her family had lived with her grandparents, George and Mary Jane Hempstead, on a farm in Klamath Township, Humboldt Co. CA. Her mother died when she was a child, but her father lived a long time. Why she was adopted is presently unclear.

She married Edwin Edgar Voigt in Oakland,CA on Aug. 27, 1921 in the chapel of Mills College where she had graduated in 1915. They had two children, a son and a daughter.

Rev. Voigt served the church as a pastor and also was a professor at Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL (called Garrett Biblical Institute at the time). He was elected a bishop of The Methodist Church in 1952.

Eleanor took post-graduate work at Yale Univ., taught school and became a member of the General Board of Education of the Methodist Church. 1948 she was elected a delegate to Methodist Jurisdictional Conf. 1952 she was an elected delegate to General Conference, the primary governing body of the church.

She represented the Methodist Church at the Constituting Conference of the National Council of Churches in 1950.

NOTE: At some point in her early adulthood, Eleanor began spelling her birth name HEMSTAD. Her tombstone had HEMSTED.
