Birth: 1602, England
Death: Mar. 31, 1681
Hartford

Benjamin Burr, born in England about 1602, was the founder of the Hartford branch of the Burr family. He first appeared in America as one of the original settlers of Hartford in 1635. He may have been one of the members of the Winthrop Fleet, and came to Hartford from Massachusetts. His name is found in the list of original proprietors of Hartford in 1639, when he was alloted six acres. It has been claimed that he was admitted as a freeman in 1658, but if he was one of the original settlers of Hartford, why did it take almost 20 years for him to be a freeman?. He drew eighteen acres in the land division of East Hartford in 1666.

Benjamin was a soldier in the Pequot War. His son Thomas made an affidavit in 1721, "I Thomas Burr of Hartford aged 75 years certify as above written that I heard my father say as aforesaid, and also remember said Munson when he lived in Hartford and often heard my father and other Pequot soldiers say that said Munson was a soldier in said war with them." His name is on the Original Settlers Monument in the Ancient Burying Ground at Hartford. The last name of his wife, Anna, is according to John Winthrop's Medical Journal, Hanna. They had four children, the first born in England.

Benjamin was well to do, he owned two houses in Hartford, as well as houses and lands in Greenfield in Windsor. Also, one of Hartford's streets was named for him. According to the records of his estate, Benjamin died on March 31, 1681 in Hartford, Connecticut. His will was dated June 2, 1677 and proved April 20, 1681. He mentions his wife Ann, his sons Samuel and Thomas, his daughters Hannah Burr and Mary Crow and granddaughter Mary Crow. Benjamin is buried in the Ancient Burial Ground at Hartford.
