Peter B. (Pete) Hermanns, 67, a long-time Waitsburg area resident, died Saturday at his home, after a short illness.

He was born March 4, 1902, in David City, Neb. and moved to the Waitsburg area a year later with his parents, Adolph and Nellie Hermanns. On Nov. 23, 1927 he married Metha Witt in Walla Walla. Hermanns had been connected with farming all of his life and in 1965 he, his wife and son, Dean, were named the "family of the year" for soil conservation.

Hermanns was an active member of many groups, including the Columbia County Cattlemen's Association, Columbia County Farm Bureau, Touchet Valley Grain Growers, Washington State Wheat Association, Washington State Cattlemen's Association and the Dayton Riding Club. The past few years he was on the Columbia County Fair Board.

Hermanns is survived by his widow, Metha, at the home; a son, Dean, at the home; a stepson, Bob Loundagin of Richland; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Andrew (Mary) Weir of Newport and Mrs. Gail (Pat) Piersol of Prescott; a brother, Andrew A. Hermanns of Walla Walla; and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Barnes of Waitsburg and Mrs. Lee (Leona) Hatfield of Dayton. He is also survived by five grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Marshall-Herring chapel with Rev. Vernon Smith of the Waitsburg Christian Church officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow in the Waitsburg Cemetery. Hermanns will lie in state from 1 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday. The casket will not be opened after the service.
