James H. "Herb" Crary, 81, died April 21st in Boulder. CO.

He was born Sept. 4, 1928 in Denver, CO to John and Lucille (Jeager) Crary. Herb attended South High School, received his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Denver in 1950 and his Masters of Science and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1961.

He married Beth Jackson on Sept. 9, 1949 in Denver, CO. Herb worked in Boulder for the National Bureau of Standards and its successors until 1973 as an electrical engineer. He then worked for the Pentagon for approximately 9 months in 1974 before working as a scientific programmer in the Information Systems Dept. of Jefferson County in Golden from 1975 until 1997 when he retired.

After retirement he pursued his interest in photography until he became ill in 2009. Herb was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the National Rifle Assn and the Boulder Rifle Club. He loved classical music and the Boulder Philharmonic, where he attended concerts for the past 10 years.

Survivors include daughters Susan Smith, Lyons, CO, Nancy (Gary) Lavalleur, North Bend, WA and Anne (Henry) Martinez, Littleton, CO; Grandchildren are Joshua (Rebecca) Lavalleur, Kent, WA, Ben (Brittany) Lavalleur, Tallassee, FL, Scott Smith, Arvada, CO, Michael Smith, Boulder, CO, Stephanie Martinez, Denver, CO and Ryan Martinez, Littleton, CO and a great-grandson, Adam Lavalleur, Kent, WA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beth Jackson Crary in 1999.

Memorial Service, 10:00 a.m., Thurs., April 29th, First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 1820 15th St., Boulder, CO., with the Rev. Carl Hofmann officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Boulder Deacon's Fund, or St. Labre Indian School, P. O. Box 216, Ashland, MT 59004-1001 www.stlabre.org. Reception following ceremony in the Sheldon Jackson Parlor, First Presbyterian Church of Boulder.
