Funeral for 103-year-old Mabel J. Swain, a longtime Yamhill resident, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Yamhill Christian Church, with Pastor Randy Armstrong officiating. Private interment will be in Rest Haven Mausoleum in Fir Lawn Cemetery, Hillsboro.
Mrs. Swain died Dec. 27, 2003, at Osprey Pointe Assisted Living Community, McMinnville.
She was born April 18, 1900, in Hope, Ill., daughter of Orren A. and Cora B. Warner Rice. As a young girl, she started school in Veedersburg, Ill.
She moved with her family to Carlton in 1913 and they settled in various communities around Yamhill County. She attended Stag Hollow School, then started high school but did not have the opportunity to complete it. She moved to Danville, Ill., in 1916 and accepted the Lord as her savior in 1917.
She had met Alf Swain prior to returning to Illinois and they were engaged in 1918, after which she returned to Oregon. They married Dec. 30, 1923, in Yamhill.
"She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and a devout Christian," her family said. She was a Sunday school teacher for preschoolers in the Yamhill Christian Church for many years and attended church for more than 25 years without missing a Sunday. She also loved to sew, knit, make quilts and do fancy work.
Mrs. Swain, a longtime housewife, in 1948 took on the job as cook at Yamhill Elementary School, a job she held until her retirement in 1965.
She had lived in the same house at East Main and South Elm streets from 1936 to Nov. 1, 2001, when she moved to Osprey Pointe. She had many friends and will be fondly remembered and greatly missed, the family said.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1960.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Everett L. and Winona G. Swain of Ashland; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Grant E. Swain, in 1988; two brothers, Glen and Walter Rice; and four sisters, Gertrude Daniels, Bernice Rice, Grace Plahn and Azalea Hoard.
Arrangements are being handled by Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Yamhill Christian Church and Legacy VNA Hospice-McMinnville in care of Macy & Son, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
