Alfred Burton Hunter died at his home in Defiance April 28, 1905 at the age of 60 years and 5 months. He was the son of Baylis Ervin Hunter and Elizabeth Elmira Hunter, who were born and reared in Missouri. Mr. Hunter was born near where Americus now stands in Montgomery county, Mo., Nov 27, 1844; he united with the M. E. church, south, about 1875; he married Minerva Jane Crockett Sept. 19, 18__, with whom he lived a quiet and peaceful life until April 25, when he departed this life, and was called to that bright Land above. He leaves, besides a large circle of friends, a wife and two sons, Edwin and Baylis, who lived with him at the time of his death, a father, one sister, Mrs. M. J. McDaniels, and two brothers, W. W. Hunter, who lives on the home place near Amricus, and Sammie J. Hunter of Stephensville, Texas, to mourn his death. One brother, two sisters and his mother preceded him to the next world.
Mr. Hunter during the early part of his life aided his father in farming and clearing away the timber on the home place which was then a wilderness. He had very few opportunities for education, only such as the old log school house afforded. But, having a great desire for knowledge, he used every opportunity afforded in every way. Having to rely upon his own efforts, often laboring at his books by the midnight lamp, he still persisted in studying what would best fit him for the duties of life. At an early age he followed the work of a school teacher for a number of years.
He labored as a farmer, merchant and clerk until 1882, then he defeated E. E. Sharp in the political campaigh and was elected circuit clerk of Montgomery county, which office ___
